Rebuilding Trust in a VUCA Environment for Continued Business Success

At its essence, populism represents a crisis in trust, a sense that the institutions of government, business, the media and even NGOs—and the people who lead them—no longer represent the best interests of the general population. What do today’s populist tendencies mean for business—and what must business leaders do to earn the license to lead and protect themselves against the risks? And do so while engaging their most important asset – their employees.

The Employee Experience Journey

According to the 2016 Deloitte Global Human Capital Treads report, 92% of the survey respondents highlighted the critical need for organisations to redesign themselves and build a meaningful employee experience for the workforce.

With the increasing need to deliver employee engagement through experience, the concept and approach of employee experience has become the new norm for companies and HR. Everyone is talking about it and embracing it to attract and retain top talent. As developing the workplace as an experience takes into account everything that affects people from technology to physical infrastructure to leadership, it is not surprising to see HR leading this shift towards the new organisation.

Yet, the fundamental questions remain – what is the right employee experience? How can HR reinvent the workplace to create experiences that are aligned with business needs and help deliver superior engagement and performance levels?

The answer to these questions – conscious design and engineering of the employee experience. It is crucial for HR to start learning and adopting this approach to develop truly meaningful and engaged workplaces.

Designing & Implementing a High-Impact Mentoring Programme for Talent Development & Retention

According to the 2016 HireRight APAC Employment Screening Benchmark Report, nearly 63% of companies surveyed highlighted hiring, developing and retaining talent as one of their most significant business challenges. High staff turnover was also another key challenge, with 54% of APAC organisations surveyed facing difficulties in retaining top talents.

For an industry that relies heavily on its people and talent, the high turnover rate is a huge hurdle for HR professionals working in advertising agencies. With the evolving needs of today’s multi-generational workforce, how can HR innovate to overcome this challenge and retain skilled employees?

As employees today value constant feedback and learning opportunities, implementing a high-impact mentorship programme can help to improve employee satisfaction and develop a sustainable talent pipeline for companies. While mentoring provides the platform for knowledge transfer and leadership development, successful mentoring programmes do not just happen. They require both structure and flexibility and are built through careful planning and sustained commitment by the HR team.

Evolution of the Workspace: Strategies to Build a Collaborative Organisation

Collaboration in the workplace is nothing new. However, with the availability of new technologies and increasing importance among employees to have a strong sense of purpose at work, more companies have started to build innovative and supportive workspaces for employees to work across functions, networks and teams.  While it is undeniable that collaboration can lead to new solutions and results for business growth, research has also shown that a collaborative workspace can be a source of motivation for employees to get to work each day. Above all, a conducive office set-up can encourage more effective working relationships and produce a more efficient and engaged workforce.

Home to over 800 employees, the new Philips APAC Center was designed to introduce a mobile, flexible and agile way of working. Recognising that the company has a diverse workforce with different working styles, the Philips HR team worked tirelessly with the Design and Communications teams to build an open, productive and collaborative workplace for employees. Besides ensuring that the new office was designed with adequate facilities for employees to network, collaborate, learn and have fun, much effort was also put into initiatives to educate their workforce, drive Workplace Innovation and support the organisation’s transition from a fixed to mobile desk.

Building a People-Oriented SME – Why HR Matters & How to Do it Right

With today’s tight labour market and changing demographics of our workforce, attentive and skilled management of employees is essential for continued business growth and long-term survival. While many SME business leaders recognise the difficulties in recruiting and retaining the right talents for their companies, few truly understand the strategic role of HR and how an organisation's HR capability can support its growth. In fact, some may even view HR as another labour cost as opposed to an investment in their existing human capital. Consequently, HR teams in SMEs often end up focusing on transactional activities rather than building HR policies.

To tackle the challenges that lie ahead, SMEs have to undergo a change in mindset and realise that HR is an essential pillar for business growth. How can you then create effective HR strategies and upgrade current ones so as to support your organisations' development and growth?

Hear from Sam Chee Wah, General Manager of Feinmetall Singapore, as he shares tips on how to change business leaders' perspectives on HR, as well as tips on how SMEs can improve and strengthen their HR capability so as to future-proof their organisations.

A Frank Conversation in the Workplace: Tips on Implementing Good Dialogue to Boost Employee Morale in SMEs

With the multi-generational workforce of today, effective conversation and open communication are essential to fostering trust among employees and building a satisfied and engaged workforce. A lack of communication can drive unhappiness at work and ultimately affect a company’s bottom line.

While employees can be very smart and talented, they are unable to embrace fast-paced transformation and get desired results due to restrictive behaviour issues such as arrogance, disengagement and change resistance. Gone are the days where business leaders can just tell employees what to do and expect positive results. How can leaders today develop good conversations with their staff and create a positive and developmental work culture?

Join Nicholas to find out how, as a leader, you can work with employees, especially under-performing ones, and influence them to see situations more strategically, and grow beyond their limitations. Discover simple tools and platforms to engage your team and help them see for themselves where they are falling short and how they can improve, resulting in lasting change.

3 Keys to Unlock Your Team’s Agility & Potential

Locked minds, poor habits and negative attitudes kill productivity, potential & agility. 74% of Singaporeans DISLIKE what they do while most ‘skive’ 90 minutes a day in ‘personal’ activities. Every year, each employee loses 6 work weeks.  Worse, your bottom 1/3 employees may not even be covering their costs while your top 1/3 are frustrated carrying the load for the poor performers.

Unlock these problems forever with Michael Podolinsky as he uncovers:

  1. Systems to control interruptions and reduce completion times by 50%
  2. The 90-Minute Marvel & 25-Minute Multiplier for 30% boost in productivity

L&D Toolkit for SMEs – Best Practices in Developing a Self-Directed Learning Culture & Implementing Cost Effective Training Programmes for Your Company

According to the 2016 SME Development Survey conducted by DP Information Group, around 85% of the companies surveyed highlighted their major challenge in upgrading their workforce skills. With lean teams and various priorities in SMEs, managers and business leaders are finding it hard to send their employees for training programmes. Attending courses would be taking time away from work and affecting the day-to-day operations of their organisations.

Besides challenges in employee development, the survey also revealed that many local SMEs face difficulties in hiring and retaining young staff. Employee retention is crucial in SMEs as there are costly financial implications when team members leave. How then can SMEs attract key talents to join them, stay with them, and contribute effectively? What edge do SMEs have over MNCs in attracting today’s multi-generational workforce and developing them?

Hear from Lawrence Chan as he examines:

  • Factors on why employees stay with their companies
  • Best practices in building a self-directed learning culture in your organisation
  • The 70-20-10 learning framework and strategies to design training programmes that support your employees’ professional and personal development

Great commercials, strong PR, a brilliant social media strategy all warrant effort when building your company’s brand. But there’s no better PR than an army of loyal employees living and breathing your brand. “No, I’m telling you this works, I’ve seen it from the inside! This product has changed my life! Let me show you.”
Or  “I’m so sorry you had that experience, it’s not usually like that.”

Yes, you can define your brand and advertise it. But don’t overlook the power of your employees as brand ambassadors.

Our best employees want to be part of the inner circle. To build business sustainability and strengthen your competitive advantage, increase ownership by treating your staff as owners of your brand. Busting Bureaucracy & Building a Change Platform

Exclusive Master Series
Change is inevitable in the digital age. To remain competitive, many organisations are in the midst of a large scale change programme. The end goal may be a strategy reboot, a cultural transformation or a capability upgrade.  The problem is, most change programmes are defensive—they’re more about catching up than leading; they’re expensive—they consume vast quantities of organisational time and money; and they’re shallow—they fail to change the fundamental DNA of the organisation.

Given this, it’s no wonder that so many companies get caught out by the future.  What’s needed is a fundamentally new approach to change. Instead of being episodic, change must be continuous.  Instead of being scripted at the top, it must emerge from below. Instead of being “rolled out,” it must be “rolled up.”

Leveraging his research and pioneering work on strategic “resilience”, Professor Gary Hamel will lay out a blueprint for Management 2.0 and help you to create an organisation fit for the future.

Join Prof Hamel in this highly provocative hands-on workshop as he equips you with the skills to help your company:

  • “Hack” the management processes and recognise the warning signs of “strategy decay”
  • Overcome the risks of denial
  • Manage the make-or-break challenges that will drive competitive success in the “creative economy”
  • Build a future-oriented vision that is powerful enough to overcome the gravitational pull of the past
  • Accelerate the shift of resources from legacy programmes to future-oriented initiatives
  • Weave the principles of resilience into every management process and practice

Beyond the Buzzword: Innovation from Everyone, Every Day

Plenary Session
In today’s hyper-competitive global markets, companies not only face uncertain economic conditions, they also have to deal with hyper-efficient competitors and omnipotent customers. In addition, with the advances in technology, successful products and strategies can be quickly replicated. Without continual innovation, success is fleeting. Innovation is the only insurance against irrelevance and the only way to  stay ahead of competition.

While many companies recognise that innovation is the only sustainable advantage, few have made it the responsibility of every single employee. It is still more a buzzword than a genuine core competence. So how can organisations retool mindsets and make innovation a “baked-in” capability instead of a “bolted-on” activity? How can you embed innovation in your company DNA?

In this engaging and stimulating session, world-renowned management thought-leader Professor Gary Hamel will share a systematic approach to making innovation a deeply embedded capability.

Based on 20 years of ground-breaking research and collaboration with some of the world’s most renowned companies, Prof. Hamel will show you how to:

  • Unlock the innovation potential of every employee
  • Build a portfolio of high-impact, game-changing strategies for your organisation
  • Dramatically multiply the returns on innovation investment
  • Build management systems that keep everyone focused on innovation
  • Manage the day-to-day tension between innovation and operational efficiency

  • Reflects on the limitations of a transactional approach to leadership and business
  • Looks at the changes that are accelerating volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA) in which leaders now operate;
  • Raises three questions:
    • What kind of organisation do you need to create to succeed in this environment?
    • What kind of leader do you need to become to lead in that organization?

It’s All About Culture – Why We Need to Talk About It & How to Measure It

While technology has enabled competitors to copy successful products and strategies quickly, an organisation’s culture is the hardest thing to replicate. With top companies like Google, Airbnb and Zappos attributing their business success to corporate culture, a winning culture has never been more important than it is today. It is the heart of an organisation’s competitive advantage and influences how employees behave and work.

Despite this knowledge and efforts in strengthening company culture, studies have shown that over 80% of employees are disengaged at work. As the modern workplace continues to evolve, HR must do more than simply conduct engagement surveys. It is time for HR to step up and start thinking and acting like business owners.

It is undeniable that culture is critical to the success of any company and it is so much more with a more robust set of data points than just “How satisfied are you with your job?”.

Discover a new innovative way to get to the heart of engagement as Rita Trehan uncovers a set of practical tools to shape the corporate agenda, as well as provide deep and rich insights into what people truly think and what can ultimately drive performance within the company.

The Building Blocks of Gender Diversity – P&G’s Formula for Success

In the current fast-paced, competitive and talent scarce landscape, gender diversity is vital for continued business success. Besides encouraging talent development, creativity and collaboration, a diverse and inclusive workplace also improves a company’s financial performance. While more companies are recognising the benefits of empowering and developing gender-diverse teams, studies have shown that there is minimal female representation in senior management roles and corporate boards.  According to a recent survey by Grant Thornton, the level of women in senior roles globally has risen just 3% in the past five years, to stand at 24%.

Despite the business case for gender diversity, why has there been so little progress and so few women in key leadership positions? With today’s multi-generational and diverse workforce, how can you best address the challenges in building and promoting a fair, inclusive and innovative environment?

In this short session, Vinitaa Jayson will give an overview of Procter & Gamble’s direction on Diversity and the importance of building a supportive environment and inclusive culture to enable employees to work to their potential. Millennials; we’d all be hard pressed to go a day without reading an article or hearing a conversation addressing this generation in the workforce. With an extraordinary population of millennials taking on key leadership positions and having to manage and engage with one another, how can you keep these high-potential employees happy and focused on driving the business’s goals as well as give them the sense of purpose they crave?

Gallup studies have shown that about one in eight workers are engaged at work. With the rise of the millennial workforce and increased emphasis on corporate culture, traditional rewards and recognition schemes are no longer a key motivation tool for employees. Although rewards are addictive, higher incentives can actually lead to lower performance because after the “rush”, employees usually demand a bigger dose. Rewards are control in disguise and often sabotage workforce creativity and productivity.

While the Sawyer Effect states that adding a sense of autonomy, mastery and purpose can turn work into play, there is no quick and one solution to keep employees motivated. Join Edie Raether as she unravels strategies to drive an engaged and motivated workforce. Learn how transformational leadership focuses on internal desires and explore:

  • Winning tips to ignite your employees’ inner entrepreneur
  • Needs of the new generation and key strategies to improve problem solving
  • Powerful tools and practices to increase ownership and commitment
  • Game plan to unleash creativity and boost employee productivity

Branding for Successful Talent Acquisition – Understanding Brand Perception, Personality and Positioning

Instead of promoting a job description - promote your brand; the culture of your organisation.
A Brand symbolises how people think about your product or service. It’s about perception and creating the right emotional connection you want with your customer. Just as an organisation wants to connect emotionally with consumers, employees want to emotionally connect with the organisation they work for.

In this session, Marketing expert, Pamela Wigglesworth, will walk you through the 3 attributes you can tap into to create the emotional connection of your organisation’s brand: perception, personality and positioning.
By understanding the psychology of branding, you can effectively position your organisation in a way that emotionally connects with your ideal talent prospects; individuals who want to be a part of your corporate ideals, values, culture, products and services first and a great title and salary second.

Building a Robust & Cost-Effective Talent Pipeline for the Digital Age

Companies have been struggling for years to improve leadership and build a sustainable talent pipeline for business expansion. While many recognise the importance of strengthening, reengineering and improving organisational leadership, few have succeeded in developing a robust succession management plan. In fact, poor succession planning can be very costly for businesses. This is especially so when:

  1. Employees are incorrectly identified as high potentials;
  2. The right training and development is not given to the high potential talents due to lack of resources or poor development design;
  3. Talents who have been groomed as high potential leave for other organisations, hence resulting in loss of investment returns.

In this session, Gary Lee will share insights and practical tips on designing and implementing a talent development programme that is more cost effective and aligned with your business strategy.

Becoming the Employer of Choice – Creative Recruitment Strategies for SMEs to Win the Talent War

While small and medium enterprises (SMEs) employ seven out of every 10 employees and make up more than 99% of businesses in Singapore, studies have shown that conglomerates and multinational companies (MNCs) still outstrip SMEs as employers of choice. With the easily-recognisable brand names, strong organisational culture, higher remuneration and better career prospects, it is not surprising to see SMEs losing out to MNCs in the talent war. The struggle for the best and right talents is also amplified with the tightening of regulations for employment of foreign workers.

To remain competitive and sustain companies’ bottom-line and growth, it is crucial for SMEs to attract, engage and retain a quality workforce. What can SMEs do differently to attract and recruit their fair share of talent?

In this enlightening session, Dr. Jaclyn Lee will uncover:

  • Practical tips on building a strong Employer Value Proposition in SMEs for talent acquisition
  • Creative strategies to compete for top talent in today’s competitive and tight labour market
  • Best practices and tools to strengthen your recruitment campaign and position your company as an employer of choice

Creative & Practical Tips on Building Sustainable Leadership Programmes for Employees

As the business environment becomes more complex, volatile and turbulent, successful leaders and effective leadership are increasingly identified as key sources of competitive advantage for organisations to ride the wave of change and disruption. Strong enterprise leaders are essential in propelling companies forward and driving business growth, especially in small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

However, with SMEs typically having limited material and financial resources, many face difficulties in attracting, developing and retaining suitable leaders.
